We created Central Florida Health News in 2011 to deliver the best in health news and local features. With 171 editions under our belt, it’s safe to say we’ve been around the block a few times and seen our fair share of triumphs and challenges.
When the first American magazines were published in the mid-1700s, they were often short-lived because of publishing costs, distribution systems, and a lack of readers with leisure time. (Imagine that?!) The industrial revolution eased many of those painpoints, clearing the way for successful publications.
Most people are familiar with the strain the digital age has placed on publications, especially by luring ad dollars away from them.
Today, some say that magazine publishers can be successful if they focus on a specific audience — like we do with Central Florida Health News — creating interesting content and building a loyal reader base. Still others say the margins are dauntingly slim. I can attest to that, especially in light of skyrocketing paper costs and ever-rising postal rates.
Industry experts say niche operators are better positioned to serve their customers as long as they lean into their digital community and take an audience-first approach. I, for one, hope they are correct. Central Florida Health News offers something no other local publication does: free content that captures the essence of the latest health headlines and harnesses the power of the local community for a more impactful read.
We’ve taken our message to the digital field through multiple channels, including our online editions on Magzter.com, a website that brings you our organic content in addition to the latest area press releases, our email newsletters, and social media.
(Let me pause here for a shameless plug: Be sure to sign up for our weekly enewsletter at https://centralfloridahealthnews.com/enewsletter/.)
Despite the changing landscape and trends, independent publishers of niche magazines — like myself — continue to create unique content that captures the subject matter like no one else can. It’s precisely what we’ve been doing for nearly 15 years.
