Spread Cheer, Not Germs

The holidays are a joyous time to gather with friends and family, but when it comes to germs, sharing isn’t caring.

It’s easy to let your guard down when you’re in full celebration mode, but just like the unspoken rule of “no talk of politics,” there are a few common-sense-but-not-so-commonly-practiced habits to keep yourself and others healthy this season.

  • Keep food dishes covered during transport and while on the buffet to protect them from coughs, sneezes, and sneaky hands.
  • Bring your own serving utensils so people don’t use their own to dig into shared food. (Bonus: It also prevents cross-contamination for those who have food allergies.)
  • Clearly label dishes with their ingredients when feeding large or unfamiliar groups. A quick note can help guests with allergies avoid a potentially dangerous surprise.
  • Be mindful of finger foods. They’re fun, but they can also be an easy way to spread germs. Choose wisely!
  • Serve snacks like nuts, pretzels, and chips in single-serving cups to avoid everyone reaching into the same bowl.
  • Use ice trays, insulated carriers, slow cookers, or hot plates to make sure cold food stays cold, and hot food stays hot. Nobody wants a side of food poisoning with their holiday meal.

Of course, sleep, rest, hydration, and hand sanitizer are the unsung heroes of the season. Go forth and share the love, not the flu. Happy holidays!
