Full Speed Ahead in 2026

As we head out into the new year, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the pace of change in the healthcare industry shows no signs of slowing and may even surpass the breakneck speed of 2025. It’s an exciting prospect, even if it is a bit staggering to consider.

Nationally, healthcare headlines are dominated by rising insurance premiums and high-stakes debates as lawmakers go head-to-head in the nation’s capital. But here in Central Florida, the most visible changes are unfolding much closer to home, driven by rapid growth and major investments in healthcare infrastructure.

This summer will mark the highly anticipated opening of the seven-story, $109 million Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital — a development that will significantly reshape the local healthcare landscape. At the same time, construction is set to begin on BayCare’s new freestanding Emergency Department in Davenport, designed to serve East Polk County’s rapidly growing population and reduce pressure on traditional hospital emergency rooms. In addition, AdventHealth still plans to build a full-service hospital in Winter Haven.

Beyond bricks and mortar, the region is also investing in people. Programs such as Lakeland Regional Health’s residency program, Polk State College’s healthcare career pathways, and FSU’s College of Medicine partnership with BayCare continue to strengthen the talent pipeline. They play a critical role in addressing the physician and provider shortage here in Polk County.

Technology is another major force shaping the year ahead. As industries scramble to adopt artificial intelligence, healthcare is no exception. Robotic assistants, automation, and AI-driven tools are already being integrated into clinical and administrative settings, improving efficiency, accuracy, and patient outcomes. With Central Florida home to a growing number of innovative healthcare organizations, the region is perfectly poised to remain at the forefront of research and implementation.

Healthcare in Central Florida is expanding and evolving at an extraordinary pace. We’re excited to see what the future holds for our partners across the industry and proud to be here for these pivotal moments. Following along with Central Florida Health News this year as we witness history unfolding in real time.
