Protect Your Vision: UV Safety for Your Eyes

July is UV Awareness Month, a great reminder that protecting your eyes is just as important as protecting your skin. When people think about sun protection, they often remember sunscreen but forget about their eyes. Just like your skin, your eyes can be damaged by ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

Long-term exposure to UV light has been linked to several eye conditions, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and growths on the surface of the eye. UV rays can also contribute to photokeratitis, which is like a sunburn of the eye and can cause pain, redness, and light sensitivity.

The good news is that protecting your eyes from UV damage is simple and effective.

One of the best ways to protect your eyes is by wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Not all sunglasses offer the same level of protection, so it’s important to check the label. Darker lenses do not always mean better protection, UV blocking is what really matters.

Polarized lenses can also help reduce glare, especially when driving or spending time near water. While polarization does not replace UV protection, it can make your vision more comfortable in bright conditions.

Wearing a wide-brimmed hat is another easy way to reduce UV exposure to your eyes, especially during peak sunlight hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

It’s also important to protect children’s eyes. Kids often spend more time outdoors, and their eyes are more sensitive to UV light. Getting them into the habit of wearing sunglasses early can help protect their vision for years to come.

Remember, UV exposure happens year-round, not just in the summer. Even on cloudy days, harmful rays can still reach your eyes.

Taking a few simple steps today can help protect your eyes and preserve your vision for the future. Your eyes work hard for you every day, make sure you protect them.
