In my last two columns (part 1 | part 2), we debunked some common myths about the practicality and effectiveness of dental implants. Now let’s talk affordability. Nearly 70 percent of adults have lost a tooth, and the solutions are pretty straightforward: dental implants, bridges, or dentures. For most, dental implants are the best option, but misconceptions about their affordability keeps many from considering implants altogether.
Myth: Dental implants are too expensive
The cost of dental implants has fallen dramatically. When considering the alternatives, bridges and dentures can also be expensive, especially in the long run. While dental implants have a high success rate, many find that their bridges or dentures need to be adjusted or replaced eventually; bridges and dentures also contribute to further tooth loss and bone loss in the jaw, requiring more dental work (and more strain on personal finances). Dental implants may be slightly more expensive than bridges or dentures, but they are worth it as a superior product. Look to dental insurance and payment plan options to make implants even more affordable.
Myth: I have too many teeth to replace
Some patients are daunted by the time and cost of replacing multiple teeth. However, there are many options when it comes to implants, so discuss all of yours with an experienced dentist.
Myth: I already have a bridge/dentures
Even if you have already gotten a bridge or dentures, you will likely need to replace them in the future. Dental implants are still an option— one that is much more natural and comfortable.
