As the senior community in Central Florida continues to grow, the conversation around senior health has never been more important. More adults are living longer, fuller lives, and we’re excited to showcase a senior who is redefining what health looks like at her age.
At 74 years old, Nancy Georges is not who you would expect to find in the gym pumping iron three days a week. Yet in November, she set a world record in her age and weight division by deadlifting 210.5 pounds. We talked with her about her fitness journey and how her passion for weightlifting was born from a desire to move more, a goal she says many peers her age share.
One of the most overlooked aspects of healthy aging is physical strength and balance. While many people focus on heart health or managing chronic conditions, maintaining muscle strength and stability is just as essential. These factors play a key role in preventing falls, preserving independence, and supporting overall quality of life.
In this month’s Medical Advice article, Florida Department of Health-Polk County’s Dr. Alison Young-Tan explains why falls remain one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, even though many could possibly be prevented. Strength and balance training through activities like resistance exercises, yoga, or guided fitness programs can help seniors greatly reduce their fall risk. Better yet, they can improve mobility and posture, and supply the confidence boost needed to stay active on a daily basis.
Inside, Georges’ trainer offers advice and simple exercises that can help seniors get started on their own path to stronger muscles and soaring confidence.
