Editor’s Dose: Adventures in Dentist Land

If you’re a parent and you’ve been to a pediatric dentist’s office lately, then you’ll probably agree that they are much more kid-friendly than what we remember from when we were children. And with a big sigh of relief, I am definitely thankful for that!

My kids actually enjoy going to see their dentist. But I also need to point out that it’s not just because of the atmosphere or the things to keep them entertained while they wait. Yes, the games are fun and playing pretend dental care on an animal puppet is enjoyable, but that’s not all there is to it. For my kids, they enjoy seeing their dentist and his assistants. Their dentist and his supporting staff are always warm, friendly, and able to make any of my kids feel comfortable.

In fact, they often refer to their dentist as the nice man “who knows Santa Claus’s phone number.” I can clearly remember the look of awe and instant admiration on my then-toddler’s face when her dentist was explaining to her that he likes to call Santa to tell him what good patients he has. (How clever of him to associate himself with the big man in red in the eyes of children!)

For my children, a trip to the dentist is just as extraordinary as a trip to wonder land … and that is how it should be.
