Word of Mouth: How to tell if dental implants are a good option for you

Having missing teeth affects more than just the aesthetics of your smile. Your teeth also keep the bones of your jaw healthy; if you lose teeth, then you lose jaw bone as well. Dental implants are the only option that addresses both the lost tooth (or teeth) and the deterioration of bone. But how do you know if dental implants are a good option for you?

Dental Implants are the Best Option for Most
Modern dentistry has come a long way, meaning that dental implants are a good choice for most people. As discussed in prior columns, dental implants are on par with the cost of bridges and dentures, other options, no matter if you need just one tooth replaced or many. In the past, dental implants weren’t a viable option for those who suffered bone loss due to missing teeth and/or dentures or bridges. Today, your dentist can employ specialized procedures that can regrow lost bone or address most other oral health issues.

Conditions That Could Exclude Dental Implants
While dentistry has advanced dramatically, there are a few instances where dental implants are not the best choice. Generally, these instances are due to serious health issues, such as cancer, uncontrolled diabetes and uncontrolled gum disease; other factors like smoking and heavy alcohol use can also affect whether dental implants will be successful or not. All in all, your dentist is the best resource for determining whether dental implants are a good option for you.
