It seems that plenty of people were able to visit family and loved ones over the holidays and new year, but unfortunately they shared more than just the holiday spirit. They shared their germs as well.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of people seeking healthcare because of flu-related symptoms is very high and still on the rise, including here in Florida. The CDC reports that nationally, influenza test positivity increased to 18.8%.
Data from the Florida Department of Health aligns with the CDC’s report, showing an increased flu positivity rate in the state, along with an increase in flu emergency visits.
Not surprisingly, hospitalizations for the flu remain highest in those 65 and older and particularly vulnerable populations.
Of course, the best way to protect yourself from the severe complications of the flu is to get your annual vaccination, but keep in mind that flu shots can take up to two weeks to become fully effective.
The Florida Department of Health also recommends the following measures to prevent spread:
- Increased hygiene practices like washing your hands with soap and water, covering your coughs and sneezes, and avoiding touching your face.
- Avoiding crowded places.
- Staying home when you are sick.
Protect yourself, and thanks for reading Central Florida Health News.
