August 26, September 9 – Yoga for Beginners

Ideal for beginners aged 16 years of age and older and open to all levels, this class will focus on breathing, balance, strength and alignment using Vinyasa flow techniques. Cost is $5 but Silver Sneakers benefits are also accepted. Located at the Simpson Park Community Center at 1725 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. in Lakeland. No registration is required. 

August 26, September 2, 9 – Low-Impact Exercise Class

Located in the Coleman Bush Building, 1104 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. in Lakeland, this free, low-intensity workout class will be held from 5:30-06:30 p.m. Perfect for those who are just beginning their workout journey or need to slowly ease back in after some time off, Instructor Lilita Berrien will help you to improve cardiovascular function and circulation. No registration is required and the event is free for all participants.

August 28, September 4, 11 – Women’s Self-Defense Class

Participants will learn to defend themselves against common threats, enhance safety, and lessen the chances of becoming a target. Perfect for teens, college students, and all women over the age of 15. Taught by a female instructor! This course is from 6-7 p.m. at Simpson Park Rec, 1725 Martin L King Jr Ave. in Lakeland.  $12 per class or $38 per month. August 29, September 5  – Total Joint Replacement

This free class is for patients who have a total joint replacement surgery scheduled, plus one guest per patient. The class will be held from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Winter Haven Hospital – Wellness Conference Room, 200 Ave F NE in Winter Haven. September 5 – Basic Life Support CPR Course

This BLS course provides prehospital providers, like EMTs, paramedics, fire fighters, in-facility hospital providers and other public safety professionals the knowledge and skills necessary to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adult, children and infant patients. September 6 – Growing and Cooking with Edible Flowers

Join UF/IFAS Polk County Extension to learn all about the nutritional benefits of edible flowers, tips for meal planning and seed selection/soil preparation. Participants will learn to cook and cultivate unique edible flowers that can be grown right here in Central Florida.  This free, engaging, and educational hybrid workshop, offered both online via zoom and in person from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Winter Haven Public Library, 325 Avenue A NW. September 7, 28 – American Red Cross CPR/AED/ First Aid Combo Course

An instructor-led Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED combo course, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., offered through the American Red Cross (ARC). Participants will learn the basic yet critical key actions that can be taken during a life-threatening emergency, that can help sustain or save a life until EMS arrives. Cost is $55 for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED and $45 for Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED. A resuscitation mask is needed as well, which can be brought from home or purchased at the event for $12. Located at Trinity Christian Center, 4416 Co Rd 540A, Lakeland. September 7 – Self-Love Women Circle

Come down to Blangelika’s Boutique off Berkley Road in Auburndale to enjoy an afternoon of sisterhood and empowerment! Women can connect with and support each other and embrace their inner goddess! September 9 – Dining with Diabetes – Living Well With Diabetes

The first of a 4-class series, this course is designed for people with type 2 diabetes and will provide food demonstrations and samples of diabetic-friendly foods, as well as provide tips to manage diabetes and support and motivation through connecting with others. Located at Central Florida Health Care – Winter Haven Women & Children at 201 Magnolia Avenue, Winter Haven from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Free of charge to all participants with diabetes, pre-diabetes, and caregivers of those with diabetes. September 10 – Alzheimer’s Association’s In-Person Caregiver Support Group

A safe and supportive environment for discussions and education about Alzheimer’s and specifically geared towards caregivers of friends or family members with Alzheimer’s. Confidential and educational, participants can develop methods and skills to assist in potential challenges together. Located at the Dunedin Senior Center, 6 Lake Hunter Drive in Lakeland, from 10 – 11 a.m. This event is free of charge, but registration must be completed via the Alzheimer Association’s 24/7 Helpline at  800-272-3900.

September 14 – Bariatric Support Group 

Join Lakeland Regional Health for a support group at 12:30 p.m. in the Mulaney Auditorium, 1324 Lakeland Hills Blvd., Lakeland. This free event is specifically designed for presurgical and postsurgical patients, as well as their family members. The group provides a supportive environment where members can network with and gain support from other bariatric patients. September 17– Heart Smarts Class

Join Hearts Smarts, hosted by Lakeland Regional Health Hollis Cancer Center at 3525 Lakeland Hills Boulevard, Lakeland from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Heart Smarts will help you understand heart disease and how lifestyle changes may improve cholesterol, blood pressure control, and reduce risks. September 21 – 17th Annual Hispanic Heritage Festival 

Located at Lake Gwyn Park, 135 Avenue A E., Wahneta, this will be Polk County’s 17th annual family-friendly celebration of Hispanic culture! Featuring Venezuelan and El Salvadorian food trucks, dessert, and drinks, craft stations, and information vendors, including Polk State College, Healthy Families, Supervisor of Elections. September 24 – Forget Me Not Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group

Families and individuals who have experienced the loss of a child through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, or early infant death can gather with others to explore their grief while honoring their loss by learning how to strengthen communication with loved ones and engage in self-care activities. The meeting takes place from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Winter Haven Women’s Hospital, Classroom C, 101 Ave O SE, in Winter Haven. It is a free meeting. You can register online at www.baycare.org/events

September 28 – 4th Annual Rally & Ride Out of Darkness

Love Surrounds You Memorial Foundation and Harley Davidson have partnered to organize this rally and ride in memory of those lost to suicide; the aftermath families must face, those who struggle daily, and for those who need resources. Their mission is to bring awareness about mental health and suicide to all by collaborating with other resource programs in the community. This will be an escorted ride that begins at 5320 Shady Oak Dr. N, Lakeland and ends at Sun ’n Fun, 4175 James C. Ray Dr, Lakeland, with more than 70 vendors, entertainment, alcohol and food, camping for the weekend, and so much more.
