Wisdom Teeth Facts to Brush By

by GERALD V. CERDAN, DMD

One little known fact about wisdom teeth: While many patients do need to have their wisdom teeth removed, your wisdom teeth can stick around as long as they don’t cause any trouble with your oral health.  If your wisdom teeth come in straight, have enough room in the mouth that they aren’t impacting your other teeth and gums, and they are easy to clean, then there is no reason they need to come out. However, that’s not always the case.

Unfortunately, many patients’ wisdom teeth can cause some common oral health problems to the point the teeth need to be extracted.  Here are a few facts about Wisdom teeth to remember as you practice good oral hygiene:

  • Wisdom teeth can be hard to clean, because the teeth are all the way back in the mouth.  If that’s the case, that means cavities and infection will set in, which can lead to gum disease.
  • There’s not enough room.  If there is not enough room in the back of your mouth, wisdom teeth will inevitably put pressure on other teeth, moving them and changing the dynamic of the mouth, such as your bite pattern.
  • Wisdom teeth come in crooked.  For whatever reason, wisdom teeth can come in at strange angles, causing discomfort and pain.

Keeping these facts in mind, sometimes the wisest decision for your mouth when it comes to wisdom teeth is extraction, but there are cases where they can remain.  At our office, we specialize in the latest dental practices, technology, and services, and our team is committed to providing the best dental care for our patients.  Call us today to schedule your next checkup: 863-293-1108.
