When people think of the Boys & Girls Clubs, some phrases that come to mind are “cultivating character” or “education and leadership development.” But like all good organizations, it’s the people who operate the programs day-in and day-out that mold our impressions of an institution for mentoring the leaders of tomorrow. We don’t just think of these terms because they are ideals. They are called to our minds because we see fruits of the labor every day through the children who walk in and out of their doors. The folks at our Citrus Center Boys & Girls Clubs, Inc. are committed to these philosophies and so much more, which is why when I hear about people like Walt Hall, I have to share it with you.
You see, Walt was a man who— for 47 years— devoted his life’s ambition to serving the children of the Boys & Girls Clubs. On the books, his title was chief professional officer, but to the kids, he was whatever they needed him to be that day— or in that moment. That means he might have been custodian, bus driver, or teacher one minute, and then physical director, coach, or janitor the next. There was no task that was beneath him. He came in early and left late. He would sometimes do paperwork and bookkeeping on his day off because he felt as though these responsibilities would at times take away from his primary job description: helping the kids.
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting or knowing Walt Hall, then you know what I’m talking about. If you’ve never had a chance to meet him and say “thank you,” then here’s your chance.
