Stay Skin-Savvy This Summer

Summer in Florida brings the sweltering heat and dangerous UV rays we all know too well, but it’s also a season for vacation, beach days, and outdoor adventures. Amid all the fun, it can be easy to forget the importance of protecting your skin from the sun. That’s a mistake that can lead to serious health consequences down the road.

With so many different sources of “news” today, misinformation spreads easily. That’s especially true on social media, where misleading and potentially dangerous health myths can circulate unchecked.

A study conducted last year by the Orlando Health Cancer Institute revealed that many young adults are falling for sun safety myths, leading them to skip critical precautions like sunscreen.

In this edition, we talk with Watson Clinic dermatologist Dr. Linwood Bond about some of these myths and what trends he’s seeing in his own patients. We also hear from Florida Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center APRN Cheryl Campbell to learn more about the lesser-known signs of skin cancer that go beyond the usual suspicious mole. (Spoiler alert: You may be shocked by what else to look for!)

As hydration and skin safety take the spotlight, take our Pop Quiz to find out whether you’re cleaning your reusable bottle the right way. It might seem like a small thing, but neglecting it could have a big impact on your health!

We’re also excited to spotlight BayCare’s Career Camp, which is opening doors for high school students potentially interested in a career in health care.

On behalf of the Polk County Medical Association, thank you for reading Central Florida Health News! Wishing you a healthy, hydrated, and sun-safe July!
