Doubling Down on Diabetes

Now that the sea of pink has subsided with the close of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re bringing in the blue for Diabetes Awareness Month. According to the CDC, roughly 37.3 million people — or 11.3 percent of the U.S. population — have diabetes. Another 8.5 million have not yet been diagnosed or don’t know they have it.

In this edition, we talk with two individuals who have been deeply affected by type 1 diabetes.

Nick Plott and Ashley Bell Barnett recognized a need for a support network and created a support group for those with T1D and their loved ones.

That passion has been matched by Central Florida CEO Ann Claussen, who has also made strides to extend care and awareness throughout Polk by way of the planned Diabetes Center of Excellence. Claussen spoke with us about the impetus for the center and the impact she hopes it will have.

Inside, Dr. Joy Jackson offers advice to help diabetics navigate the holiday season. Finally, don’t forget to test your knowledge on our Pop Quiz!

On behalf of the Polk County Medical Association, I hope you have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!
