AdventHealth Winter Haven ER Doctors and Nursing Staff Share How to Stay Safe This Labor Day Weekend

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — As Labor Day weekend approaches, many families are gearing up for outdoor activities and celebrations. However, along with the fun comes the need to stay vigilant about safety. Clinicians at the AdventHealth Winter Haven ER are sharing essential tips to ensure that everyone enjoys the holiday weekend safely.

Sunburns, Heat Exhaustion and Dehydration
Sun exposure is a major concern during Labor Day weekend festivities. In the short term, too much sun can lead to sunburns, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke in severe cases. To avoid dehydration, it’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

“Always use a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above to protect your skin,” said Bobette Moseley, AdventHealth Winter Haven ER Senior Nurse Manager. “Make sure to reapply the sunscreen frequently, especially after swimming, to reduce your risk of skin damage and long-term consequences like skin cancer.”

Avoid Drinking and Driving
The holiday weekend is also a time to be extra cautious on the roads. According to the most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, around 41 percent of the deaths on the road during the Labor Day period involved an alcohol-impaired driver.

“We cannot stress enough the importance of not drinking and driving,” said Dr. Gerado Fernandez of the AdventHealth Winter Haven ER. “If you plan to drink, make arrangements for a designated driver or use a rideshare service. Your safety and the safety of others on the road depend on it.”

Drowning Prevention and Water Safety
Water activities are a staple of Labor Day celebrations, but they come with risks.

  • Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Stay informed about local bacteria levels in bodies of water to prevent illness.
  • Swim with a buddy and ensure an adult is dedicated to supervising all children in and around a pool or body of water.

“Drowning is preventable,” Moseley said. “By staying vigilant and taking the proper precautions, you can protect yourself and your loved ones while still enjoying the water.”
