Senior Living: Understanding the difference, Part II: Memory care

LAST EDITION, I covered the distinct differences between independent senior living and assisted living. To better help your senior loved one have the best possible lifestyle, let’s talk about another type of community to consider.

MEMORY CARE

These communities offer many of the same amenities and activities as assisted living but in a secured setting. The activities are tailored more toward individuals with memory impairment, and the staff is trained to enhance the lives of such residents. The residents benefit from more individualized care and a variety of stimulating activities.

Memory care accommodations typically consist of private or semi-private (shared) rooms. Of course, amenities such as housekeeping, laundry, and all meals are included. Some communities have LOC (Level of Care) in addition to the cost of the accommodation. Typical forms of payment include private pay, long-term care policy, VA Aid & Attendance, and Medicaid Diversion/Medicaid Waiver. Varies by community.

Aside from the best accommodation that our loved one needs, there are other financial considerations, also. Examples include a Community Fee (flat rate or equivalent to first month’s rent), Buy-In, LOC (Level of Care), and next month’s rent (should you move in after the middle of the month), and all vary by community.
