Oral Hygiene Tips for the Cooler Months

When it’s cold outside, exposed skin isn’t the only part of your body that can suffer from a drier climate. Your mouth and oral hygiene can suffer as well, and it is important to remain proactive in keeping your mouth, teeth, and gums healthy during the colder months.
Here are a few common issues that are associated with cold weather:
Chapped Lips: One of the more common issues that we have all dealt with at one point or another, chapped lips are the result of dry lips caused by exposure to the wind, cold, and sun. To avoid dry and uncomfortable lips, use Chapstick or lip balm to help retain the moisture in your lips. Drinking plenty of water can also help by keeping your skin hydrated.
Cold Sores:  Cold sore breakouts can occur when exposed to the colder temperatures and winter sun. When battling cold sores, the best winter tips for a healthy mouth are to make sure the skin around your mouth is protected. Use products with SPF of 15 or higher and try to keep your hands clean as well to avoid the spread of viral bacteria. Stress is also a common cause of oral breakouts, so maybe skipping the holiday trip to the in-laws isn’t such a bad idea after all.
Sensitivity: That sudden surge of pain you feel when biting into cold always seems present during the cold winter months. Cold temperatures and wind combine to leave your teeth feeling sore, even when you avoid foods that can cause these painful episodes. You most likely can’t avoid cold weather altogether, so consider brushing with a desensitizing toothpaste. Sensitive toothpastes use ingredients that help avoid sensitivity, so you can enjoy cold beverages and seasons without worrying about sharp pain from sensitive teeth.
Don’t let the cooler weather spoil your holiday season. Stop by the office today or call to schedule an appointment before your yearly family get-togethers. Take care of your oral hygiene and happy holidays!
