Things are heating up at Central Florida doctors’ offices, hospitals, and clinics as summer gets into full swing.  Read the latest in events, awards, advancements, and other happenings going on this summer at area healthcare providers.



In recognition news, Winter Haven Hospital held its Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in May during National Volunteer Week.  In addition to other awards, The Spirit Award, highlighting outstanding service, was given to Curtis Dudley.  Also during the ceremony, the Winter Haven Hospital Auxiliary announced the three winners of a $2,000 Youth Scholarship, and the Auxiliary presented a $150,000 check to the Winter Haven Hospital Foundation to support the growing Maternal Fetal Medicine department.

In employee recognition news, area BayCare hospitals honored their nurses in May during National Nurse’s Week.  Bartow Regional Medical Center (BRMC) honored 12 Unit Nurses of the Year: Felicia Braddy, Emergency Department; Taylor Dickinson, Emergency Department; Sandra Medina, Acute Care; Melissa Kirkland, Progressive Care; Bill Sunailitus, Progressive Care; Hillari Vaca, Post-surgical; Sandra Swain, Imaging; Marinda Wells, Intensive Care; Ed Barnhart, Intensive Care; Andrea Stallworth, Operating Room; Sonya Nolin, Peri-operative; Jane Trudeau, Acute Care.  Jane Trudeau, RN, was chosen as the Nurse of Excellence.

In new employee news, BayCare Medical Group announced that family medicine physician. Dr. Margaret Eastham, joined BMG in February, and will continue seeing patients in Lake Wales.

In event news, the new WHH Emergency Department will hold an Open House, featuring a tour, kids’ activities and refreshments, on July 15, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Visit WinterHavenEmergency.org to register.



In new employee news, Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center (HOFRMC) announced the addition of robotic-trained, board certified urologist, Michael D’Angelo, MD, to the HOFRMC staff and to a new medical practice, called Heart of Florida Physician Group Urology.  “My goal is to improve the quality of life for my patients and offer individualized solutions using advanced technology,” Dr. D’Angelo said in a HOFRMC press release.

In event news, HOFRMC will be hosting a Back-to-School Health Fair on July 29 for area residents, patients, and their families.  This event is free and open to the public.  There will be presentations by first responders and local physicians, free crafts and face painting, drawings for tickets to special events, free school supplies, and even a Teddy Bear Clinic.  It will take place from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at HOFRMC, 40100 U.S. Hwy 27 in Davenport



Lake Wales Medical Center (LWMC) is as busy as always.  In employee news, quarterly awards were announced at the end of April, with the Employee of the Quarter awarded to Pat Rickard, RN, in the Cath Lab; Manager of the Quarter was awarded to Amanda Hulett in Radiology; and the Volunteer of the Quarter was awarded posthumously to PeggyAnn White, who volunteered at the lobby information desks and in medical records.  Ron, PeggyAnn’s husband, who is also a hospital volunteer, accepted the award on her behalf.  Employee of the Month awards were also given out, with social worker Karey Lewis being named employee of the Month for April.

In center award news, LWMC’s prestigious Wound Healing Center received both the Center of Distinction Award and the Center of Excellence Award from Healogics.  “This is our fourth year winning the Center of Excellence Award, and our fifth year winning the Center of Distinction award, and we are very proud of that accomplishment,” said Tiffany Rodriguez, RN, program director at the Wound Healing Center in a LWMC press release.

Furthermore, LWMC’s Health Information Management (medical records) department was awarded the Jean Byers Award for Excellence in Cancer Registration for the seventh time.  The award is given by the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine’s Florida Cancer Data System, a statewide cancer registry.

In other center news, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new location of The General Surgery office of Lake Wales Medical Group: 407 S. 11th St. in Lake Wales. The new office space will be utilized by general surgeons Dr. Fred Silvestri and Dr. Fred Howard, and Gastroenterologist Dr. E. Moshe Izsak, all LWMC medical staff.

Lastly, LWMC announced in late June that new and existing customers will benefit from access to an online scheduling service that can book same-day and next-day appointments with Lake Wales Medical Group physicians. “Making it easier to access to medical care through our new online appointment scheduling increases our ability to deliver great value and convenience to our community,” said Lake Wales Medical Center CEO Rebecca Brewer in a LWMC press release.



In new employee news, Lakeland Regional Health (LRH) welcomes Rene Cajuste, MD, a hospitalist; and Xavier Román, MD, an obstetrician and gynecologist. Furthermore, Maureen Leckie, MSN, HACP, associate vice president of Operations and Growth for LRH, and Tim Allen, MBA, LRH, lead security supervisor and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, both recently completed a training offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Ala. through The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Lastly, in center recognition news, LRH’s Grasslands Campus recently earned LEED® Gold certification—Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design—from the U.S. Green Building Council.  “We are so proud that our team’s hard work on the new Grasslands Campus has earned LEED Gold certification,” said Elaine C. Thompson, PhD, FACHE, Lakeland Regional Health president and CEO, in a LRH press release.  “We look forward to providing the safest and highest quality care and experiences for the patients and families we serve in this beautiful and efficient venue for many years to come.”



In employee recognition news, Watson Clinic announced the winners of its Program for Employee Excellence and Recognition (PEER) awards.  May’s PEER award recipient was Shannon Fowler, a receptionist at the Watson Clinic Highlands building, and June’s PEER award winner was Renee LaPlaca-Wilkerson, LPN, a nurse in a family medicine office at the Watson Clinic South location.

Additionally, Phuc Vo, MD, FAAOS, FAOSSM, an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist recently earned recertification status in both orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

In new employee news, Watson Clinic welcomes Kathi R. Brown, ARNP-C; Cody Powell, PA-C, ATC, CSCS; Olga M. Medina, ARNP-C; Ann M. Phelps, ARNP-C; Marcia Berry, ARNP-C; and Shelly Hansel, PA-C.
